The 2012 Santa Fe Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be conducted on Saturday, December 22. The CBC is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society, with over 100 years of citizen science involvement. It is an early-winter bird census, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S., Canada and many countries in the Western Hemisphere, go out over a 24 hour period and count birds. So how can you help? For the past four years, I have been counting the birds around Las Campanas so they can be included in the Santa Fe CBC. This year I would like to enlist your help in an effort to get a more accurate count. If you supply water or bird feed at your home, I would like to hear from you on the different types of birds and an approximate number that you see or hear (Owls) at your house on December 22. Historically, Las Campanas has led the Santa Fe area in number of Bluebirds and Ducks.
Please foreword your results to firstname.lastname@example.org and I will tally the totals and submit the results for the Santa Fe CBC. If you have any questions on an identifying a bird, a quick photo would help and there are several on-line resources. If you have any questions feel free to email me and also remember the project is for everyone regardless of your birding skill level. Tom Egelhoff
