Las Campanas Golf Update by Jason Epstein, Director of Golf

Just around the corner are our Halloween Tournament October 31st, the one-day Black Friday Sale on November 23rd, and our Balloon Sale/Cocktail Reception on December 19th. Las Campanas will be sending out a list of courses we have scheduled for our Monday Golf Days in Albuquerque, closer to the end of the year.

I want to thank the entire membership for making our 2012 golf season a memorable one. While there are still quite a few “golf days” left (tee time availability is more than ample this time of year), cooler temperatures are on the way. For those of you who leave Santa Fe early in September, you’re missing the best weather and course conditions of the year! We will be sending a golf specific survey out to you in the coming weeks. The focus will be on our events and participation, and will cover a few other areas as well. Thank you in advance for taking the time to fill it out; it will go a long way to helping us prepare for the 2013 season.

We were able to build upon the many successes from last year over this summer and I am looking forward to the 2013 season, which will be here before you know it. Our schedule of events has been finalized and will provide a few changes we feel will be well received. I want to thank our General Manager David Loan, Golf Committee Chair Mark Silbert, Director of Agronomy Tom Egelhoff and the entire Golf Committee for their support this year. I owe my entire staff a huge thank you for all of their efforts this season, they made me very proud.

I want to take this opportunity to update you on our Winter Schedule for the Golf Operation. First and foremost, and consistent with the Board’s direction of maintaining at least 18 holes of access during the winter,  the Golf Committee has approved that the front loop of Sunset and the back nine of Sunrise be utilized for play beginning December 1st . The remaining holes will be closed at that time through early Spring. In order to protect the turf appropriately, and based on the recommendation of the USGA, we will be moving to temporary greens for play on the holes that remain open. Our plan is to move cups back to the proper greens on or as close to April 1st as possible, weather permitting. All 36 holes will be top dressed heavily to protect the turf heading into the winter and there will be several areas, those most vulnerable to desiccation, that will be covered with tarps as well. Beginning December 1st all play on the driving range will be moved to the rear tee.

Our hours of operation remain consistent with the past two years and are as follows:

November

Golf Shop Hours  9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Tee Times 10 a.m.
Driving Range Hours 9:30 a.m. – Dusk

December to March

Golf Shop Hours
  9 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Closed Mondays and Tuesdays)
Tee Times    10 a.m.
Driving Range Hours   10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

*Signs will be posted to indicate when the weather permits walking the course Mondays and Tuesdays.*The Professional Staff will continue to keep you posted on weather delays affecting start times and will update the ForeTees home page with important information daily.

Lastly, in the coming weeks golf carts will be restricted to the cart paths only for the winter; the timing of that decision will depend on the weather.  Once we move to the cart paths only, it is mandatory for all carts to remain on the paths until weather allows next spring. Carts in the rough and fairway during the winter cause damage that is unsightly, costly to repair, and will be slow to recover heading into next summer. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support.
